Updated: Jan 26

RKC Beginner's Kendo Course Poster

The 3-month RKC month Kendo Beginner's Course will take place from 16 March 2024 to 22 June 2024.

Suitable for ages 13 - 80 years old, irrespective of gender, fitness levels and food preference! Kendo will help you Increase your fitness levels, Improve your mental focus, and Inspire you to develop yourself further!

This will be the first formal beginner's course that the RKC Dojo has conducted since the rebranding of the dojo back in 2021.

Although we gladly accept enthusiastic beginners throughout the year, we feel that having a formal, limited-period beginner's course will allow for a more structured approach to both the teaching and learning Kendo.

The 3-month course will cover the following:
  • Overview of the Kendo journey from beginners with no armour all the way to being in armour (bogu) and beyond;

  • Understanding the dojo etiquette (rules, rituals, behaviour, etc...);

  • Japanese Kendo terminology (what and how to say when doing kendo);

  • Basic Kendo philosophy that will enhance the training experience by cultivating an attitude of personal development;

  • The technical skills of the basics of kendo (kihon), including footwork, body dynamics and control of the bamboo and wooden sword;

  • Application of technical skills against an armoured practitioner;

  • The first 3 forms (kata) of "bokuto ni yoru kendo kihon-waza keiko-ho".

A team of Kendo instructors will be assigned to the beginner's cohort and work on a rotational basis over the duration of the course. The team will have the above material to cover, as well as bring in each of their individual Kendo experience and teaching abilities.

The course will require participants to attend at least 2x 2hrs classes a week at either the RIVONIA and/or OBSERVATORY dojo.
